Tripe & Onions / Steak & Mushrooms Heat 10

by Lindsay Butler

The penultimate race of the series, Heat 10, was sailed in near perfect conditions. Due to a lack of wind the start was delayed an hour until a gentle variable 10-knot oscillating southerly filled in to propel sixteen yachts around Club course 34.

In the Tripe & Onions Start Again (Ken & Jo Elliot) snuck home ahead Agnes (John Milne) who seemed to be destined for another win only to misjudge the final turning mark and had to settle for second place. The nippy little Bluebird Tandeka (Patrick Clarke) sailed well into third place.

The conditions proved ideal for the rapid Absolut (Richard Gates) finishing first, in the Steak & Mushrooms, ahead of the consistent Ana (Zrinko Levar) and the equally well-sailed Shore Thing (Robin Worland) in third place. Richard sent one of his crew (pictured left) to collect the wine. This fellow, who shall remain anonymous, was well equipped as every sailor should be with a pencil sharpener attached to a lanyard ready for any eventuality.

With one heat to go Cocoon would seem to have the Steak & Mushroom series trophy in their grasp but the Tripe Onions is not so clear cut. It’s a two horse race between Ellen Lewis and Start Again and the final result will obviously hinge on the last heat.

Magic’s novice crew, Mahesh, returned for another sail Sunday. Raw but enthusiastic and may be a prospective new member – we’re sure Rick is working on it.

The final heat (race 11) will to be sailed on Sunday 26 March.
