Protecting Our Children
Employers, self-employed persons, employees and volunteers all have obligations under the Working with Children Act 2005. By fulfilling these obligations, we can all help to make Victoria's children safer.
The Working with Children (WWC) Check is one mechanism to help keep children safe. It is designed to complement good recruitment, selection (including reference checking), supervision and training practices for staff and volunteers who work with children.
When selecting people to work or volunteer with children, it is important to understand that employers, volunteer organisations and agencies still need to satisfy themselves that people who have passed the WWC Check are suitable for the specific roles within their organisation.
December 2016 Update:
Organisations operating in Victoria and providing services or facilities specifically for children will be required to meet Child Safe Standards from 1 January 2017.
Activities and services provided to children can vary between organisations but all organisations need to focus on building and maintaining a child safe environment.
What is required?
From 1 January 2017 organisations with responsibility for children will need to have in place:
child safe policies and codes of conduct
screening, supervision and training processes
processes for responding to and reporting suspected child abuse
strategies to identify, reduce or remove risks of child abuse
strategies to promote the participation and empowerment of children
inclusive approaches for children with a disability, Aboriginal children and children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Resources to assist organisations to develop systems and processes to meet the standards can be found on the Child Safe Standards page of this website. Eight partner organisations have also been contracted to develop and deliver sector specific training and resources.
Recent legislative changes
Legislation recently passed will give the Commission new regulatory powers to oversee and enforce compliance with the standards. These new powers will take effect on 1 January 2017, giving the Commission the ability to request information and documents from organisations and inspect premises where services are provided for children, or where a child is engaged to provide services or facilities. The Commission will assist organisations to understand and meet their obligations through information, guidance, advice and other support.
The Commission will also be working with other regulators to promote compliance with the organisations it co-regulates.
